Could you still remember when we first heard of the plans for the automated elections here in Pinas? We reacted differently; some were so pessimistic and cynical, marami ang nagulat! Many assumed that the government could never pull it off and many consider automated elections as another waste of people’s money. Many Pinoys, ofcorse, still holds their dreams of seeing the government learn from the lessons of the past elections. Many were still hopeful.
Despite the technical glitches and procedural errors on the PCOS machines, the Commission on Elections is happy to see the elections being pushed through without the problems which were anticipated by election watchdogs and government critics. There were no massive disenfranchisement scenarios, no failure of elections.
The process was indeed faster from the previous elections. Gone are the days when the nation had to wait for days, weeks or even months for the final tally. Now, with just few hours and just few days, we now know, we now have our new set of officials for our town, province and country as a whole. Noynoy elected as President and Binay as the Vice President. But the real winners of the May 10 elections are the more than 40 million Filipinos who endured long queues in a hot and humid day. To the first time voter like me, May 10, 2010 is a significant day to remember. Although there were reported deaths and violence before and on the election day in Mindanao and other hotspot areas. But, by and large, the election was peaceful. For all Filipinos who voted this May 10 national election... Congratulations! You just made a mark on our country's history for its 1st automated election.
Automated elections, was for me a successful one.
